Absolute lakefront. Absolute bliss. A hidden haven at the edge of Lake Hawea, Wanaka, New Zealand. Stay a night, a week or longer and enjoy the ultimate retreat. The Black Shack is a gorgeous sunny lakeside cottage nestled amongst native trees, with world class mountain and lake views. It doesn‘t get more idyllic than this. With only a 2 mins drive from Lake Hawea township or 15mins drive to Wanaka township you get to enjoy easy access to shops and your daily flat white but then quickly be back in paradise relaxing and enjoying nature. This is a unique slice of paradise. There are not many cottages available to rent in such an idyllic spot. You can hear the birds every morning, hear the water of Lake Hawea lapping near the cottage. You truly feel renewed and invigorated after a stay here. Surrounded by native trees, nestled in a corner nook of the lake, John‘s Creek has its own microclimate. There is open space for kids and adults to run around and bike. Its easy to get your boat in at the marina at Hawea township or with a 4WD directly outside the cottage.

"Had a fantastic birthday weekend here! The view is amazing and the funky shack fab. We especially enjoyed all the old photographs and wondering who they all were??? Our boys enjoyed our late night camp fire on the lake side singing songs! We can't wait to go back.

This is one special place. We absolutely loved our stay at the Black Shack. The interior design is spot on and the snug little cottage has been so lovingly restored. We ate good food, drank good wine, but it was the view we feasted on most. Thanks Annabel, Amanda & Ben.

We had five fantastic days at the Black Shack and everyone in our group vowed that they will be returning to this little gem. The setting is simply stunning, and although you are close to the services of Hawea township and Wanaka, there is a feeling of remoteness and authenticity. We spent three days skiing Cardrona, Coronet Peak and Snowpark and on the last day we walked out around the eastern side of the lake towards the Timaru River (next time we would take mountain bikes). In the evenings we cranked the fire and enjoyed the eclectic, retro atmosphere that has been thoughtfully created. We even fired up the bath and got two lads in there! The Black Shack is truly unique.
Owner's reply -Thanks Dan, you guys are welcome at the Shack anytime.

The most relaxing holiday ever, in the most amazing, peaceful and beautiful location. Lake Hawea is my new favourite place. We will definately go back again! Just loved it. It was like living in our own 1940's postcard, but with every convenience. (The feather Duvet was luxurious!) For us native Northlanders, the Southern temperatures of April seemed quite chilly, but the Bach was snug and warm and eating dinner with the vista of the lake and mountains was just awesome. Thankyou so much for letting us enjoy a little piece of paradise!

The view of the lake coupled with a cozy shack makes this place ideal to spend some quiet time. I love how the beautiful nature's just a few steps away.

What an amazing place! A funky kiwi bach with a piece of New Zealand paradise right on its doorstep.
I stayed here with my friend from overseas and we had a blast. The bach was clean, well stocked and extremely comfortable. The highlight was definitely having an outside bath with the picturesque view and then again under the stars. I will definitely be going back the next chance I get.

Stayed here just after Christmas, an incredibly relaxing and beautiful location. I woke up early one morning, and decided to go for a walk, I was blown away by the scenery, walking along the lake edge, surrounded by mountains and valleys.
This has to be one of the more idyllic spots in New Zealand.

4. Long lazy days by the lake - down here, the sun doesn't set until 10pm in the summer.
5. Barbeque area is second to none.
6. Design features - contemporary artworks from local painters, ceramic artists and printmakers adorn the walls, along with our pithy book collection.

Instructions to get there:
From Wanaka take Highway 6 to Lake Hawea (same road takes you to West Coast).
Before you hit Lake Hawea township turn right on to Camphill Rd. Drive to the very end of Camphill. At the T junction turn left on to Gladstone Road. Gladstone Rd eventually hits a 4 way intersection - you need to veer right (not hard right) and Gladstone road takes you towards Timaru Creek. Gladstone Road turns in to a shingle road and ends up being Timaru River Rd. This shingle road will lead you to John's Creek (also called Gladstone). The first road you will see at John's Creek is Denniston. Don't take that turning. Keep straight, through the ford until you see Hodgkinson St then hang a left. The Black Shack is number 3.
